Passenger Pigeon — Another New Low
(Bandcamp Right Brain Records RBR, 2026, CD / DL)
by Jon Davis, Published 2026-05-21
Levi Fuller is a Seattle guitarist who uses the name Passenger Pigeon for his experimental solo work. He’s got quite a few releases on his Bandcamp page, but Another New Low begins an association with Right Brain Records that should raise his profile. It presents about an hour of improvised sounds centered around the guitar, which is played in both conventional and unconventional ways and modified by various electronic means. The tones range from relatively clean, almost acoustic sounding, to heavily distorted, but are never harsh or abrasive. Another New Low is more about atmosphere and timbre than technique in a typical sense. The use of looping is neither exclusively rhythmic nor ambient, going sometimes one way and sometimes the other. It’s much closer to Bill Horist’s work than that of Andre LaFosse (to pick two examples covered recently). At times, as on “The Sixth Veto,” the loop provides a backing that could pass for a warped blues while high arpeggios bring to mind 80s King Crimson. “Attack of the Twig Blights” and “A Rock for Home Plate” are structurally among the more conventional tracks, with ostinatos as backing to chordal material and more melodic parts. “Elizabeth City” presents a more floating feeling, without much of a pulse. While the overall mood is somewhat meditative, there’s a lot of variety in the density of sound, as well as the tones used, so there’s a flow of peaks and valleys to keep things interesting. Incidentally, the album cover features a photograph taken by RBR labelmate Bill Horist.
