Breathe into Form Cover art

After years of touring the UK festival circuit Nebula Sun is releasing their highly anticipated debut album of jazz-infused psychedelic rock. Nebula Sun includes Tommy Jonson (guitar and vocals), Aslan King (drums), Paul Taylor (bass), Rob Milne (saxophone), and David Boyce (saxophone). Rob and David are also members of Guranfoe, which we’ve previously covered on Sum of Erda and the Fruits de Mer Records compilation Tall TalesBreathe into Form is different, the music evolving through an organic collective writing process moving from shamanic prog rock through jazz funk and a bit of dub to gothic psych, with some soaring jams along the way. Of particular note are Rob and David on sax, an exquisite element on each of the seven tracks. Their first single “Master Healer” also kicks off the album with its fanfare-like horns, hypnotic rhythms, and its shamanic echoes from the ancestral past, a powerful album opener. The second single, “Oceans,” draws comparisons to The Police with Tommy sounding like Sting on “Roxanne.” “Into Form” is a cool, laid-back urban dub song with some very tasty sax riffing. “Reflections” evolves from its funky intro into a cosmic sax and guitar jam. Then Nebula Sun pulls back the curtains with “Sonar” and “Radio Child,” allowing the listener to observe the acolytes and sycophants chanting and approaching the temple, with both songs evolving into carefree psych jams. The album closes with “Traces,” a funky song taking the listener back to The Police, dub, mournful sax, and eventually dirge guitar. All-in-all, quite a masterful debut album.
