The Soft Hearted Scientist members Nathan Hall and Michael Bailey, AKA Nathen Hall and the Sinister Locals, just released their sixth album, Golden Fleece. Referencing Greek mythology and Jason and the Argonauts, Golden Fleece is a collection of fourteen technicolor dreams. Their signature sound, abounding with 60s and 70s psychedelia, delivers a cornucopia of scintillating songs to lift your spirits and take you on a journey from the comfort of your couch, without the need to ingest illegal substances. There are songs about being transported from a Cardiff living room in 2022 to Laurel Canyon in 1967 (Arthur Lee, Roger McGuinn, David Crosby, Jim Morrison, Peter Tork, and Joni Mitchell), dealing with a nervous breakdown, putting demons to work to pay their rent, being haunted by the beautiful 60s actress Janet Margolin, encountering a modern Jason, going the extra mile to express rage and frustration, inventing a new dance called “The Jellyfish,” and strumming while Rome burns to block out the current insanity. Golden Fleece is a delightful album, rich in textures and stories, though not as steeped in faerie and mystery as earlier albums. Nathan and Michael are able to channel 60s psych nostalgia without sounding dated. If you’ve not yet heard them or the Soft Hearted Scientists, Golden Fleece is a great gateway into their musical universe.
