I'm Hungry!! Cover art

Moja is a bass and drums duo from Japan, and aside from relentless energy, they’re not much like Ruins. Masumi (drums) and Haru (bass, vocals) make noisy rock music that has more in common with Hyper Gal than anything related to progressive rock. Haru’s bass is generally more than a little distorted — as are Masumi’s drums, for that matter. It’s as if the entire mix is played through an old PA system at a volume a little higher than it can handle, and the recording of that is what they release. But in spite of the overdriven audio, the result isn’t harsh on the ears, and a sense of fun comes through clearly. Titles like “Food,” “No Thank You,” “Excuse Me,” and “Making Noise” give the impression that this band may be noisy, but they are not gloomy in any way. “Oh My God!!” earns its two exclamation points with Masumi’s hyperactive drumming and Haru’s shouted interjections. The occasional use of synthesizers adds a little touch of variety to the sound, and I think Masumi contributes vocals from time to time as well. Moja uses the sparsity of their instrumentation as an advantage, free from having to coordinate a larger ensemble, and focuses on grooves that are somehow both tight and messy at the same time. I’m Hungry is a loud, crazy party, and everyone’s invited.
