Matt Dorsey has worked as a bassist with a close association with Dave Kerzner. He has also played with Circuline and the tribute band ProgJect. Left to his own devices, he’s created Let Go, a collection of songs very much in the style found on Kerzner’s solo albums — see Static for an example. This might be described as progressive-leaning modern rock, somewhat similar in sound to some of the 80s Neo-Prog bands but without any of the dated production. Dorsey handles not only bass and vocals, but guitars and keyboards as well, bringing in drummers Marco Minnemann and Jonathan Mover on various tracks; Kerzner also appears on one track, and Dorsey is also listed for drums. None of the songs overstays its welcome, and the whole album comes in just over 30 minutes. Aside from Kerzner, a good reference would be Asia — there are no pretensions of complication or epic importance, though you might find an odd meter here and there. But the melodies are good, Dorsey’s voice is pleasant, and the performances all around are spot-on. The rhythm section of Minnemann and Dorsey is quite potent, with “Waiting for the Fall” being the best example. In my view, music like this is difficult to pull off successfully — many musicians fail when balancing progressive tendencies with concise songs and mainstream appeal, but Let Go pulls it off admirably.
