Pop-psych impresario Marco Magnani and his band Mark & The Clouds released their third album, Waves, on May 14, 2021. Since relocating to London from Bologna, Italy in the early 90s, Marco has been a stalwart member of the city’s underground pop psych scene. After being formed about ten years ago, the band has gone through some changes from their debut Blue Skies Opening (2014) to Cumulus (2017) to Waves (2021). Today the core band members are Marco (vocals and guitar), John O’Sullivan (bass, vocals, and guitar), and Shin Okajima (drums). Mark & The Clouds continue to grow and mature their sound, especially with the addition of guest brass players Tom and Joseph Hammond, keyboardist Rachel Kashi, and violinist Maya Kasparova on several songs. Over the course of nearly an hour and fifteen songs, Mark & The Clouds take you on a mind-blowing journey through 60s / 70s lysergic pop psych dreams, with the best songs being “You and Me in Space,” “Winter Song,” “Waves,” “Heavy Drops of Rain,” and the closing track “Somebody Else.” And along the way you can detect influences from The Beatles, The Who, Ennio Morricone, and the Strawbs all tastefully combined into a unique sound. Their vocal harmonies and the brass accompaniment are well worth the price admission. If you’ve somehow missed the Mark & The Clouds experience, now is the time to check them out.
