An irrational number is any real number that cannot be written in fraction form. Irrational numbers include non-terminating, not repeating decimals, for example π (3.14159…). Irrational Numbers also happens to be the title of the new album by the Italian progressive instrumental band Lvtvm, or the Latin Lutum “mud.” It is not clear how the definition of irrational numbers relates to the five instrumentals spanning nearly 30 minutes. Each piece has form and structure, with a definite beginning and end, without any detectable non-terminating, non-repeating qualities. What Lvtvm presents are five dark, aggressive, at times dissonant, and melodic neo-prog rock tunes. Composing and recording the album was complicated by the pandemic, compounding the difficulties of being able to get together and play, thereby elongating the process and resulting in what Lvtvm calls a less visceral but more analytic record than their debut album Adam. Consisting of two basses, drums, and synths, Lvtvm brings elements of King Crimson into their mix of dark metal prog fusion. Very interesting music indeed.
