At the 2023 19th Dream of Dr. Sardonicus Festival in Wales, Sendelica recorded a number of the acts and released their full performances on Bandcamp back in January 2024. Now Fruits de Mer Records is releasing the six best tracks from London Underground’s performance on August 13, 2024, one year after the festival. London Underground was formed in December 1998 in Florence, Italy by Gianluca Gerlini (Hammon organ, piano, Mellotron), Daniele Caputo (vocals and drums), and Marco Piaggesi (bass). Despite their roots in Italian progressive rock, they found their true calling in recreating the British underground psychedelic sound with a touch of rhythm and blues, based around the Hammond organ, synonymous with Brian Auger and George Fame. Over the years the band’s personnel have changed, with Gianluca still at the helm. They gave a powerful performance at last year’s festival, just give this album a listen. The six tracks are “Billy Silver,” a killer urban jazz fusion track with sweeping electronics and keyboards, the savage cover of The Crazy World of Arthur Brown’s “Fanfare,” the Brian Auger inspired and equally thunderous “Honey Drops,” the energetic Hammond-driven prog funk cover of Jimmy Smith and Wes Montgomery’s “13 (Death March),” the extended Hammond jamming on their cover of Brian Auger’s “Bumpin’ on Sunset,” and the closing throbbing and energetic jamming on “What I Say.” This is one mighty powerful album of classic instrumental psychedelic progressive music that you should not pass by.
