Liun and the Science Fiction Band — Does It Make You Love Your Life?

A couple of years ago, I discovered Monika Roscher and her big band. The blend of rock-based compositions and jazz performed by the iconic instrumentation results in a fascinating sound. And then this album showed up in my inbox, and I discover that someone else is operating in the same general space, also a German ensemble fronted by a female singer. Liun and the Science Fiction Band have two previous albums that I’m not familiar with, so Does It Make You Love Your Life? is their third, and it’s a tasty variety of jazz rock. The album features eight relatively short tracks (compared to your average big band fare, at least) in the three to six minute range, along with two bonus tracks that are radio edits of two tracks. Up front is singer Lucia Cadotsch, originally from Switzerland, who writes all the music in collaboration with Wanja Slavin, who plays flute, recorder, saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, and keyboards. They are joined by different musicians from track to track, twenty in all, mostly on strings, with varying rhythm sections, brass, and woodwinds. In spite of the preponderance of strings, the music feels closer to jazz than classical, with a healthy dose of artistic pop music — think Björk or Florence and the Machine. Cadotsch has a lovely, expressive voice, with a lilting, intimate delivery, not prone to belting. The arrangements are very nicely done, giving the strings much more to do than long chords, and electronics are blended in seamlessly. I’m a little reminded of Leagus (another artist you should check out if you’re not familiar with them). This is an album that appealed to me on first listen, and further listens have only deepened my appreciation of the music. I’m definitely going to be checking out the previous albums by Liun and the Science Fiction Band, as well as Cadotsch’s solo releases.
