Limite Acque Sicure — Un'Altra Mano di Carte
(Minotauro Records, 2025, CD)

I don’t think many people would argue that the first generation of the music that came to be called progressive rock was largely a product of England (there were some bands in other countries, but few gained any prominence at the time). But when Italian musicians got hold of the ideas, they took it and ran, creating a large and exciting body of work that built on English styles in distinctive ways. Most of the prog fans I know developed a soft spot for Rock Progressivo Italiano after they explored the likes of Yes, Genesis, Jethro Tull, and ELP, leading them to PFM, Banco, Le Orme, and the rest. And just as there is still some interesting music coming out in the more English style, Italy’s prog scene is not dead. Limite Acque Sicure is a great example of a current band creating excellent music that takes after the giants of the 70s without sounding purely derivative. Un'Altra Mano di Carte is their second album, following on from their self-titled debut from 2022. All of the elements are here: strong lead vocals, varied and elaborate keyboards, guitar that is by turns delicate and hard-hitting, and compositions that are full of contrasts between beauty and power. The group consists of Andrea Chendi (lead vocals), Ambra Bianchi (flute, lead and backing vocals, harp), Antonello Giovannelli (organ, piano, synths), Luca Trabanelli (acoustic and electric guitars), Paolo Bolognesi (drums), and Francesco Franz Gigante (bass), and there’s not a weak link in the chain. So if you’re in the mood for new variations on the classic sounds that haven’t succumbed to the temptation of adding any prog-metal into the mix, Limite Acque Sicure should hit a sweet spot for you.
