I have a soft spot for 70s Italian prog rock, and I find it wonderful discovering new Italian bands that pay homage to those pioneers while creating a modern neo-prog sound. Case in point is the new band Limite Acque Sicure, a band of experienced musicians: Ambra Bianchi (flute, harp, vocals), Andrea Chendi (vocals), Antonello Giovannelli (organ, piano, synthesizers), Francesco “Franz” Gigante (electric bass), Luca Trabanelli (acoustic and electric guitars, guitar synth), and Paolo Bolognesi (drums). On their self-titled debut album, they present six originals plus a cover of Banco del Mutual Socorroso’s “Il Giardino del Mago.” Initially, not planning to produce a concept album, over time a thread emerged of a journey, a path, that we traverse throughout our lives, places, states of mind, habits, people, and ideas. The album opens with the impressive “Sogno d’Oreinte,” a dream of a better land with lush melodies, vocal harmonies, flute, violin, and some interesting synth lines over the course of its 13 minutes. “Terra Straniera” follows and expresses that the passage of time is inevitably a journey through memories of a world, of one's own house that no longer exists, in which you no longer recognize yourself, feeling like a stranger in a strange land. Beautiful melodies, gentle horns, and classical piano that reminded me of Elisa Montaldo. “Il Respiro dell’Anima” is very different from the first two tracks with more of a urban vibe, funky bass, and some elements of Le Orme to underscore the sacrifices mothers face on their journey through life and the years spent in the constant care of their children from infancy to adulthood. “Antico Mare” features gently lapping waves of sound, harp, guitar, and vocals as Limite Acque Sicure examines how our ancestors and civilizations have let indelible marks on our present lives. “Flamme Intorno” addresses finding new stimuli, new realities, new truths in a path that poets, artists, and anyone who accepts it will be able to undertake through modern Italian neo-prog with uplifting guitar and synth lines. Then they present a superb live recording of “Il Giardino del Mago” that far surpasses and modernizes this song from the 70s. They capture the spirit of Banco, but not quite the operatic tenor vocals, along with some influences from Museo Rosenbach. I am not sure when and where they recorded this masterpiece, but their audience was extremely polite and enthusiastic. The album closes with “Ti Salverà” to complete the journey and follow the star that shines the brightest, to save yourself, and a very tasty close to a fantastic debut album.
