When I reviewed Leslie Hunt’s Ascend, I mentioned that as an EP, it left me wanting more, and luckily now we have Descend to satisfy that want. This EP features seven songs running 21 minutes in total, and putting it together with Ascend would make a pretty satisfying album. The musicians backing Hunt this time out include several who appeared on the previous release: Michael Caskey (drums), Matt Gold (guitar), Lloyd Snyder (guitar), and Christian Cullen (keyboards, guitar, programming). Newcomers are Andrew Vogt (bass), Cory Congilio (guitar), Jerome Matthews Jr. (backing vocals), and Jim Tashjian (guitar); Tashjian is a District 97 bandmate. Hunt herself does lead and backing vocals along with acoustic guitar and occasional keyboards. The music is tastefully arranged and impeccably recorded, and the songs are intelligently written. It is once again a finely crafted singer-songwriter recording with a classic sound that could exist any time since the early 90s. When it comes to reviewing music, price is something I seldom mention, but I have to note that charging $14.99 for the CD of each of these EPs seems excessive — that’s a full-album price, and I think pretty much everyone expects an EP to cost under $10. While I’m certainly in favor of artists being fairly compensated for their work, but I’m pretty sure this expense will turn away many potential buyers. Both are available in download form at lower prices from retailers, though again at the equivalent price of full albums.
