L. Shankar — Answers
(SRI Music, 2025, CD)

The last two albums I’ve heard from virtuoso violinist L Shankar have been Full Moon (2025), which featured modern takes on Indian Classical music, and Chepleeri Dream (2020), a set of tunes in popular song format. (There was also Christmas from India (2021), but the less said about that the better.) Full Moon is a wonderful album of transcendent music; Chepleeri Dream is, to put it bluntly, lame. On Answers, Shankar returns to pop music with a set of nine songs that lack the emotional depth of the instrumental Full Moon, though they’re generally more successful than Chepleeri Dream. That being said, I can’t really recommend the album. The constant use of an Auto-Tune effect on his voice is annoying, and most of the lyrics are rather trite for all their attempted depth. His backing band (whoever they are) is competent, but it’s all in service of unremarkable songs. So if you’re not bothered by Auto-Tune and really dig New Age spiritualism, Answers could work for you, but if you’re looking for something along the lines of Shakti you’re in for a disappointment.
