Krzysztof Kurkowski — Motus Pulsans

Kurkowski is a Polish composer, producer, and synthesist who earns his bread and butter from television and film soundtracks, advertising, and soundtracks for video games. He is a founding member of the group Endorphine, with whom he has been working since 2007, and has over a dozen albums to his credit. Motus Pulsans is his most recent endeavor, and his first for the Cyclical Dreams label, consisting of nine tracks of varying length, deeply multi-layered electronic sounds with a bit of a symphonic twist, colorfully melodic but not pretty; his work on all of these tracks packs a lot of power and rarely exhibits an over-reliance on sequencing. If comparisons are necessary perhaps his work bears more in common with Vangelis than the typical Berlin school sound of early Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, and others. One of the standout pieces here is “Orbitale,” a powerful and dreamy entrance into an other-worldly expanse, slowly building up from nothing into some intense stretches of burning force, but never losing sight of the finely layered melodics and subtle cadences that undergird its strengths. On the other side, opener “Intentus et Regressus” offers more along the lines of a rock progression, with some interesting variations and synth sounds that approximate the elastic sounds of guitars. Sequenced sounds are on offer in “Scintillatio” which immediately follows the opener, though some drum programming quickly assume the cadence before slowly drifting back into a heavier version of the sequences where it all began. “Signum Spei” breathes slowly as a melody comes in from the background into sharper focus, again assuming a slow rock-like rhythm underpinning some elegant synth melodies. Tracks like “Rhythmus Rotationis” buzz along with imagination for several minutes until they completely turn the rhythm around, while “Tremor Modularis” begins with a wild dance of electronic sounds but levels out into a steady paced drift that carries the listener forward to its six-minute conclusion. There is plenty more here that should pique the imagination of listeners steeped in a swirling world of electronic sounds.
