When I think of my favorite bands of the 80s, I often forget The Church, which is a shame given how good they were — and still are, I guess. They had an international hit with Starfish (1988), but everything I’ve heard from them is excellent. Steve Kilbey was the lead vocalist and bassist in that band, and he’s still with the group, with a 2024 release called Eros Zeta and the Perfumed Guitars. But The Church by itself can’t contain Kilbey’s prolific songwriting, and he’s worked in a long-standing duo with Martin Kennedy, whose solo project All India Radio we’ve covered previously. Kilbey and Kennedy have released more than two dozen albums since 2009, the latest of which is Premonition K. Given the prominence of Kilbey’s voice, it’s easy to relate the music to his most famous band, but these 12 songs are all worth hearing. This is superbly crafted mature songwriting with touches of psychedelia in the arrangements and production. Aside from a few guest appearances, the two cover all the instruments, and it’s the kind of playing that serves the songs perfectly. You won’t hear flashy solos, but you will hear tasty textures and a wide variety of tones. While most of the songs have a dreamy mid-tempo vibe, some, like “NDE,” step up with more energy and a touch of aggression. All in all, Premonition K is a sure winner for fans of good songwriting.
