Jonatan Piña Duluc — Soundtrack Vol. I: Secuencia
(Bandcamp no#, 2021, DL)

Jonatan Piña Duluc, a new artist for me and Exposé, is an independent musician from the Dominican Republic who has just released his third album, a blend of world and Jazz fusion that he calls Afro-Dominican Progressive Psychedelia. From my perspective, Soundtrack Vol. I: Secuencia, straddles experimental, RIO, free jazz, and latin jazz music. The album is a collection of twelve suites and pieces written for film or inspired by film that range from quiet introspective compositions to the raucous avant garde. Soundtrack Vol. I: Secuencia, like his first two albums, is truly a solo effort with Duluc self-producing and playing all of the instruments, with the tracks ranging from a little over a minute to nearly eight minutes in duration. There is a bit of something for everyone on this album. If you are into challenging music, then you will enjoy “Veneno Part II,” “Veneno Part III,” “Culpa las Palabras, Filosas Palabras…,” and ”Secuencia III, Confirmación.” If instead you prefer calm introspective jazz fusion, then you will find happiness with “Dolce Vita Suite,” “Impressions Suite I,” “Impressions Suite II,” and “Secuencia I, Iniciación.” Or if your tastes are more aligned with latin progressive and percussive music, you can feast your ears on “Estalkeo y Persecución en la Duarte (Pacumpilin),” “Secuencia II, Fiesta del Veneno,” “Navajas.” and “Cuarentena 2020.” Duluc is quite an accomplished musician and you would never guess that these compositions are highly composed, orchestrated, and played by one person.
