J.C. Cinel is an Italian guitarist born in Piacenza in 1974. In 2003 he joined the thrash metal / hard prog rock band Wicked Minds as vocalist. He left that in 2008 and headed to Nashville, Tennessee, where he met Johnny Neel of Gov’t Mule and the Allman Brothers Band. In 2010 he returned to Italy and wrote his 2011 album, The Light of a New Sun. After a thirteen year hiatus his latest album is Where the River Ends, released in May 2024. The album lineup is Cinel (lead vocals, lead and rhythm guitars), Davide Dabusti (guitar), Andrea Toninelli (guitar), Daniele Tosca (bass), Marco Lazzarini (drums ), and ex-Wicked Minds bandmate Paolo “Apollo” Nigri (Hammond organ). Cinel is influenced by classic rock, southern rock, blues rock, country rock, progressive rock, and west coast rock. However, I am puzzled by why Black Widow sent this album for review. Where the River Ends is primarily hard blues rock with hints of Bon Jovi and a moment here and there where Cinel flirts with progressive rock. Cinel is a skilled guitarist and composer of hard rock tunes, but his music is not exactly aligned with my tastes. For me, the most interesting moments on this album are rapidly buried by the hard rock riffs. Though I was enchanted by the three minute semi-acoustic instrumental “Karakil (Lost in Shangri-La),” that I found to be best the track on the album. In addition, the title track does have some appeal as well as Cinel moves between his various influences, which proves to be a powerful album closer.
