Hiemis — La Chose
(Bandcamp GH Records, 2021, CD / DL)

by Henry Schneider, Published 2021-08-27

La Chose Cover art Shrouded in mystery, the new album La Chose by Spanish artist Hiemis (Latin for Winter) is an hour of some nightmarishly beautiful darkwave instrumental music. Finding inspiration from the 18th Century and Christian mysticism, Hiemis takes the listener on a transcendental journey via electronics, synths, EFX, piano, and cello, though the promo material specifies nothing about the music or the artist. The exquisitely constructed track titles are a journey in and of themselves: “The Initiate,” “Symbolic Apprentice,” “The Magic Circle,” “Grand Master or Great Elu under the Great Black Band,” “Invocations,” “The Visions,” “Invisible World,” “Holocaust of Atonement,” “The Chamber of Operations,” “The Fall,” “The Evil Spirits,” “Reintegration,” “Great Architect,” “Knight of the East,” and “Réau + Croix.” The atmosphere is reminiscent of the romantic poets Blake, Shelley, and Lord Byron. Rumbling electronics, sustained piano chords, and white noise combine in a variety of ways with the cello for a danse macabre and other eerie mournful past times, all composed during the pandemic lock down between June and October 2020. I assume that La Chose is a solo release, but I could be wrong. La Chose will appeal to all fans of the macabre and darkwave.
