Guru Guru — Made in Switzerland

It seems like only a few months ago I was reviewing Live in China, which was drawn from a 2019 performance. Made in Switzerland catches Guru Guru in 2021 at the Oxil Club in Zofingen, Switzerland, with a very similar setlist. But given the band’s free-flowing style, the two shows are full of differences. That being said, pretty much everything I wrote about the Shenzhen show applies to this one: energetic performances of fun (sometimes even silly) funky rock that incorporates sounds from around the world. For fans of the band, it will likely be great to hear another set of live music, though new listeners may be left a bit confused: obviously the musicians are talented, but the material is rather lightweight. In spite of the quality of the recording and the performance, I’d say Made in Switzerland is made for existing fans, and those unfamiliar with Guru Guru should go to one of the classic studio albums like UFO (1970).
