зелёный дядя u сёрферы чёрной дыры (or in English Green Uncle and the Black Hole Surfers) is a band from Nizhny Novgorod, Russia who have been releasing music on Bandcamp since 2018. Their discography consists of three EPs, a single, and their first full length album, Восторг по октаве (An Octave Wave). For their new album, the band consists of Vova Sokolov (guitar and vocals), Nikita Gorobtsovski (vocals), Michael Skryabin (drums), Anastasia Smorodinova (keyboards), and Konstantin Korolev (bass). An Octave Wave is an excellent album, a complete and total surprise! The ten tracks take you on a fun-filled musical journey through their unique merging of musical genres. The opening and closing tracks, “Intro” and “Outro,” ingeniously bracket the other tracks with Russian narratiions. “Intro” sets the stage with very Russian dreamy background music that reminds me of Prokofiev, and “Outro” wraps everything up with an eerie late 60s cinematic sound. In between are songs that remind me of Echo and Bunnymen and perhaps Ultravox, as well as dub, funky New Wave, and distorted psych. The band members are definitely against the war in the Ukraine, and sadly are unable to sell their work on Bandcamp via Paypal because of the war. What appears to be their protest song, “This Is Not Our Planet,” is a pseudo-punk song with some subtle wah-wah guitar that makes me think of Neu! Other songs can be quite raucous but melodic at the same time. The quirky instrumentation adds to the charm of the album. Personal favorites are “Nothing,” “Outback,” “Dream,” “Space Wanderer,” and “Turn Off the Light.” This is one freaky, weird, and outstanding album. Check out their Bandcamp page.
