Gotho — MindBowling
(Bandcamp no#, 2022, DL)

Gotho is a duo of keyboards and drums. That’s not an especially common configuration for a band, and in order to make it work, you would expect them to utilize overdubs in the studio to get a full sound. Gotho does not do that — their debut album was apparently recorded live, and it’s pretty amazing that they put out so much sound, especially without the obvious use of looping. The group consists of Andrea Peracchia on drums and Fabio Cuomo on synthesizers, and their music is centered on making a lot of noise and putting out a lot of energy. This is not anything like typical keyboard-heavy rock, though if you go back to the rawest moments of The Nice or Emerson Lake and Palmer, you can get in the general vicinity of Gotho’s sound. Cuomo favors buzzy, distorted sounds rather than pure tones or vintage instruments. You will sometimes hear what sounds like a Rhodes electric piano, but the sound is heavily treated (and probably not coming from an actual Rhodes anyway). The low frequencies are not neglected at all, with sawtooth-wave synth tones that bring to mind a heavily distorted bass guitar. The album consists of only four tracks, with “Gatta the Blanc” coming in over 25 minutes, and “Miami Weiss” over 13. Their inspirations seem to come from experimental metal and math rock, and the arrangements go through lots of changes. All in all, it’s a crazy ride for the listener, and well worth the attention of fans of the more aggressive side of progressive and math rock.
