Franco Ambrosetti Band — Lost within You
(Unit UTR 4070, 2021, CD)

Lost within You Cover art

About a year ago I reviewed Long Waves, which was credited to Franco Ambrosetti Quintet, and now I have before me Lost within You by Franco Ambrosetti Band. The quintet personnel — Ambrosetti (trumpet, flugelhorn), John Scofield (guitar), Uri Caine (piano), Scott Colley (bass), and Jack DeJohnette (drums) — all appear on the new recording, though Caine is swapped out at the piano for Renee Rosnes on several tracks, and one track features DeJohnette on piano and has no drums at all. For this outing, Ambrosetti takes his inspiration primarily from classic ballad recordings of Miles Davis, and there are no upbeat barn-burners here, just lyrical takes on some well-known tunes (“Body and Soul,” “I’m Gonna Laugh You Right Outta My Life”), along with originals by jazz greats (Horace Silver’s “Peace,” Miles’ “Flamenco Sketches”), and a couple of originals. As expected from players of such caliber, there are no false steps, so while the material walks on the mild side, all the tracks are tasty slabs of late-night mood music.
