Einseinseins — Zwei

The first thing you hear is a vocoded voice counting backwards in German, and you may very well think it’s a Kraftwerk record starting, and then a motorik beat comes in, along with bass and guitar, and it’s more like La Düsseldorf. But no, it’s the latest release by Einseinseins, a German group firmly in the tradition of 70s classics from their homeland. At times, the mix of guitars and synths, along with the way melodies are used, might remind you of the instrumental parts of Gary Numan’s early hits. “Plastikliebe” is another song reminiscent of Kraftwerk, but “Regit Etarak” has a different feel to it, with a slight inflection of early technopop (though it’s an instrumental). “Nur Fuchs” has a lovely melody and a sound a bit like early Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. During the six tracks, the balance between synthesizers and guitars varies, providing variety and interest even while maintaining a distinct identity. In fact, my only complaint is that the album is only 32 minutes long, and I could easily have enjoyed another couple of tracks as good as what’s here. If you’re looking for some good krautrock that balances new and old, Einseinseins is worth a listen.
