Eblen Macari — Un Producto de los Sesentas
(Azafrán Media no#, 1981/2025, CD)
by Jon Davis, Published 2025-11-22
I first became aware of Eblen Macari when he appeared as a guest with Cabezas de Cera at the Seaprog festival in 2017. His beautiful acoustic guitar work was a lovely enhancement to that band’s avant-prog sound, and I found him to be a soft-spoken guy who seemed very gentle and up for anything musically. I had no idea that he had this wonderful recording in his past. Un Producto de los Sesentas (A Product of the Sixties) was originally released in 1981, and it’s a thoroughly engaging album which richly deserves this reissue on Azafrán Media. Macari’s guitar work is the star here, sometimes in lovely solo pieces, but also as a component of more elaborate arrangements involving extra guitars, keyboards, strings, and percussion. Many listeners will likely be reminded of Anthony Phillips’ Private Parts and Pieces albums, and there are also similarities to classic Italian progressive rock bands of the more acoustic variety such as Celeste. The vocals, which are from Macari, collaborator Oscar Reynoso, and Janet Macari, are all very pleasant. Humberto Alvaréz contributes organ and synths, though these appear only sparsely, mostly on the track “Yo No Naci en la Huasteca.” I can’t recommend this album highly enough, so I urge everyone to track it down. Azafrán has a notably lacking presence on the web, so hit up your favorite vendors of international music to find it.
