In the course of Dobbeltgjenger’s journey through music history, we’ve touched on mid-70s inspired power pop (Limbohead) and disco (Smooth Failing), so what’s next? If I had to pin down The Twins stylistically, what I’m most reminded of is the INXS of Listen Like Thieves and Kick. These are catchy songs with energetic beats, slightly funky rhythms, and strong vocals. You’ll hear a lot of those same kinds of guitar tones arranged into memorable riffs punctuated by funky chords, and the drums have the same kind of punchy production you’d hear in the late 80s, though not annoyingly gated. Songs like “Rocket Shoes,” “Pink,” and “Genghis Khan” are catchy enough to get stuck in your head for hours. One might well ask if we need a Norwegian band to record 13 songs inspired by INXS, and your answer will obviously depend on how you feel about INXS. Certainly, Dobbeltgjenger does it really well, and I think the songs stand on their own. As far as pop music went in the mid-80s, “What You Need,” “Listen Like Thieves,” “New Sensation,” and “Devil Inside” were among the best there was, and are fertile ground for inspiration. These songs are impeccably played and produced, and a lot of fun to listen to.
