The Deadburger Factory started out as a classic five member band (guitars, keyboards, bass, drums, and vocals) in 2013 and then became a permanent experimental collective as an open ensemble. Their new album La Chiamata features a total of twenty musicians including founding members Vittorio Nistri (electronics, keyboards, lyrics), Simone Tilli (vocals), Alessandro Casini (guitars), Carlo Sciannameo (bass guitar), plus some of the best Italian prog rock and avant-jazz musicians such as Silvia Bolognesi (Art Ensemble of Chicago), Bruno Dorella (OvO, Ronin, Bachi da Peitra), Enrico Gabrielli (PJ Harvey, Mike Patton, Steven Wynn, Damo Suzuki), Cristiano Calcagnile (Anthony Braxton, Tristan Honsinger, Buch Morris), Edoardo Marraffa (William Parker, Hamid Drake, Han Bennik, Wayne Horvitz, Wadada Leo Smith), and Zeno de Rossi (Anthony Coleman, Marc Ribot, Jamie Saft, Carla Bozulich). All of the musicians met and performed together face-to-face, not remote playing via email, chats, etc., which seems to be in vogue today, but obviously before the pandemic lockdown. The music merges visceral rock and experimentation crossing between noise, avant-jazz, prog rock, and RIO. Powerful drumming is one of the album’s main features. In fact the entire album is double-drummed with pairs of different drummers on each track. The album features original music except for a cover of Max Roach’s “Tryptich” that is very abstract and eerie, recalling the end of King Crimson’s “Moonchild.” The CD comes in a plastic slipcase and a 50-page booklet (all in Italian) with song lyrics, photos, band info, and what looks to be political statements. An interesting album for the adventurous listener.
