Dark Ages is a prog metal band from Verona, Italy that formed in the late 90s. They released their first album, Saturnalia, in 1991, then a second twenty years later, Teumman Part One in 2011. Teumann Part Two apeared two years later in 2013, follwed by A Closer Look in 2017. Now after an additional five years, Dark Ages has released their fifth album, Between Us. Today Dark Ages is Carlo Busato (drums), Angela Busato (keyboards and flute), Roberto Roverselli (vocals), Simone Calciolari (guitar), and Gaetano Celotti (bass). I find myself of two minds with this album. Sometimes it feels like the music is too contrived and grandiose, sounding very middle-of-the-road and boring. Then I also find myself engaging with the music, especially Angela’s excellent organ chops, which unfortunately Dark Ages does not feature enough in their compositions. The final album track, “There Is No Need,” is twelve minutes of pure bliss that features the best of what Dark Ages can do, shifting back and forth from melodic metal prog to excellent piano and keyboard passages and flute. Not really a consistently solid album, but it does have its moments of brilliance, especially for prog metal fans.
