Byron Metcalf & Billy Denk — Activation

Byron Metcalf is a musician we have been crossing paths with for many years, going back to his collaborations with Steve Roach, Mark Seelig, Erik Wøllo, and others; his pioneering style as a composer and percussionist in the area of tribal, ritual and ambient styles is unprecedented. Billy Denk is an ambient and electronic music synthesist and guitarist, blending textures, atmospherics, emotion, luminance, and shadow. Together the duo create an immersive environment that is at once introspective, powerful, dreamlike, and primal. Activation is the duo’s first collaborative effort. The eight tracks herein explore a number of different soundworlds, all driven masterfully by Metcalf’s beats created with hand drums, shakers, and other tribal percussion, while Denk’s contributions add color, emotion, shimmer, and beauty, snaking their way between Metcalf’s primal beats, wandering through inner channels and beyond, to the outer reaches. I don’t know if it’s just me, but as I listen, images of the American Southwest drift through my consciousness, rocky outcrops and stark red iron-rich soil where native peoples live and thrive and pursue a simple life. The opening title track delivers a blast of power that sets the stage for all that follows, ribbons of colorful synth and guitars snake their way between the intense rhythmic cadences, like the point in the distance where the sky meets the earth. “Fire Tender” drives deep and intense pulses while the ambient electronics fill the background with mystical energies. “A Steady Presence” begins with a colorful array of keyboard sounds while waves of pulsating rhythms slowly overtake its delivery with a massive infusion of power, while “Awakening Sky” is about as close as we get to a pure floating ambient sound, while a deep and intense heartbeat on beats fifteen and sixteen shakes the very ground under your feet. Closer “Essential Peace” is an elastic dream with fragmentary melodies strewn throughout, supported by essential rhythms. Activation should be of interest to all fans of tribal electronic sounds.
