Anders Buaas — Tarot
(Apollon Records AP088, 2021, CD / 2LP / DL)

Tarot Cover art

While pursuing his Witches of Finnmark trilogy, Norwegian guitarist and composer Anders Buaas began work on a very special project, Tarot. Tarot is a collection of 22 instrumentals, each describing a different card from the Major Arcana in the Tarot deck. Each piece is unique, and if you played the album with the random shuffle feature, you would have a virtual musical Tarot reading. Accompanying each of the instrumentals is a set of twenty-two original paintings by artist Verena Waddell. The music runs the gamut from Appalachian folk to 70s prog with Anders performing on electric and acoustic guitars, bass guitar, mandolin, banjo, drums, percussion, glockenspiel, keyboards, synths, and theremin. It takes a bit of a time commitment, an hour and 17 minutes, to work your way through the 22 tracks, but it is well worth the time. Not a sour note anywhere.  His hard work and years-long dedication to this project is evident. Leading up to the album release, Anders issued several singles: “The High Priestess,” “Judgement,” “The Magician,” The World,” “The Hanged Man,” and “The Lovers” as well as YouTube videos of the same tracks. These six tracks are an excellent album taster. The music is universal and excellent.  If you have the opportunity, check it out.
