Den Glemte Dalen Cover art

Norwegian electronic wizard Kristoffer "Krizla" Momrak, AKA Alwanzatar, is back with a new album, Den Glemte Dalen, with five tracks of extraterrestrial bubbling and gurgling synths, flute, electronics, and incantations. He loves short repeated sequences that he improvises over, but sometimes for a bit too long. The opening track “Krystallen Forhekselse...” is an eerie piece with liquid sounds and pulsating synths that is a mite bit too long for my tastes. The second track, “Byen legges i grus,” made me think of the Lino Strangis album I reviewed a couple of months back, conjuring images of dancing demons and a bit of Krautrock jamming. “Tveita Boogie” incorporates a bit of dub, swooping filters, Mid-Eastern themes, and a nod to Ralph Lundsten, fellow Scandanavian electronic musician. Track four, “Supermåne over Orion,” returns to Lino Strangis territory using an eight-note sequence that Alawanzatar transposes up and down over the course of nine minutes. The closing track, “Maskinbånsull,” is the shortest track on the album and possibly his coldest and most sterile composition to date, plus some visceral sounds. Quite different from the electronic music from the 70s, Den Glemte Dalen is an interesting take on psychedelic, gloomy, and dreamy synthetic compositions. You have to be in the right frame of mind for this music.
