Tech Thrash (Marvels and Strange Terrors) Cover artWhat a Long Strange Journey It's Been Cover art

It’s somewhat of a difficult task to describe the music of this Greek instrumental four-piece, which falls somewhere in the area of avant post-rock. What may one minute seem atmospheric, even floating ambient, can within a matter of seconds evolve into an aggressive, edgy, and manic sonic disturbance, with grating guitars and dense layers of grotesque distortion. In general their music tends to be repetitive and somewhat minimalist, following a less rhythmically complex road, relying instead on sonic density and overlaying of textures to achieve a captivating intensity that draws the listener in. Not strangers to melody either, as evidenced on “8 Steps of the Crane and the Snake” from Journey, yet that eerie melodicism is often cloaked in atmospheric wash, occasionally reminiscent of the shoegazers, but in a far heavier, multilayered context. What a Long Strange Journey It's Been is their first full length release from early 2001, featuring three lengthy pieces where the band stretches out, and three shorter, more concise ones where things seem to be more tightly composed. Tech Thrash is their more compact 30 minute EP from the closing days of the same year, and shows a bit more reliance on cyclical electronic and looping patterns integrated into the fabric of their sound. In fact the most intriguing aspect of their sound is this collision of seemingly opposing styles, that seems to be forever surprising the listener. Definitely worthy of investigation.
