Rudresh Mahanthappa (born May 4, 1971) is an American jazz musician primarily known for playing alto sax. He was born in Italy of Indian parents, but grew up in Boulder, Colorado. He attended the Berklee College of Music, graduating in 1992; later he earned a Master of Fine Arts in jazz composition from DePaul in Chicago. He has also studied in India and works to fuse musical ideas from Indian tradition with jazz.
