Ian Gillan is a British singer best known for his time with the classic Deep Purple (Mark II). Originally a member of Episode Six, he was recruited into Deep Purple in early 1969, replacing original singer Rod Evans. Shortly after he was recruited by Tim Rice to play the part of Jesus Christ on the soundtrack for Jesus Christ Superstar, He stayed with Deep Purple from 1969 until 1973, leaving after the album Who Do We Think We Are. In 1975 the first album by the Ian Gillan Band appeared, and two more followed that, sporting a funkier jazz rock sound. In 1978 he formed a new band called Gillan, a more hard rock affair which recorded a number of albums between 1978 and 1983, after which he joined Black Sabbath for one album (Born Again) and the tour that followed it. In 1984 he rejoined Deep Purple for Perfect Strangers and has remained their singer ever since while also recording solo albums during that time.
