Vía Láctea — Vía Láctea

Keyboardist Carlos Alvarado is one of Mexico’s most respected musicians, having played with the enormously popular prog-pop band Chac Mool along with Jorge Reyes and Carlos Castro, as well as being a member of the free-jazz RIO ensemble Decibel (reviewed elsewhere in this issue), and the leader of his current group El Puente de Alvarado (see issue #11). Vía Láctea was Alvarado’s first post-Chac Mool solo project, primarily consisting of his synthesizers, piano, Mellotron, and flutes, with guests joining on flutes, guitars, percussion, and more synths. This is for the most part a dreamy, floating, and introspective music punctuated with electronic effects and samples that might be comparable to the style of early Kraftwerk colliding with Phaedra era Tangerine Dream. This is the first of several Vía Láctea releases, but the only one that made it to an LP release (others came out only as cassettes). Fans of early ambient electronics will find much here to enjoy, as this gets wildly experimental at times.
