Vanderson is the nom de plume of Maciej Wierzchowski, a Polish composer and synthesist, who started out in the early 90s as a DJ mixing music and composing non-commercial electro-pop and techno tracks while a teenager, later performing at parties, TV shows and techno-clubs. Eventually his interests shifted to classic electronic music, and in 2007 he released his first album of 70s / 80s styled Berlin school electronic music, Echoes of Darkness, a style which has remained his passion in all the years since, although he also records music in the Goa Trance style. In 2015, he recorded his first album for Spheric Music Vandisphere, followed by Sequenced Thoughts in 2018, with his latest 2055 being his latest release on Spheric. The album contains four tracks of varying lengths that clearly offer varying perspectives in the classic electronic sounds. The opener, “Above All,” stretches out for nearly fourteen minutes, an expansive slab of space music that wanders through a number of different sections, crossing through cyclical portals that offer hints of the mysterious sounds of early Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze, though never one to follow the leaders too closely, his compositions here (and throughout 2055) bear uniquely original melodies and rhythms backed by beefy sequences. With the nine minute epic “No Return” the sound takes a more gentle detour, opening into an interesting rhythmic soundworld with sparkling highlights weaving in and out of the sonic fabric. At a little over six minutes “A Few Minutes After Midnight” may be the album’s shortest piece, but offers some of the most interesting and complex timbres as it proceeds to its conclusion. The sidelong magnum opus “Until Death Us Do Part” comes at the end, a larger-than-life full-on cosmic journey where a listener can easily become lost in the immensely beautiful expanses of space. While I’m not certain what the title 2055 refers to, fans of mid-70s Tangerine Dream and the like will certainly find plenty herein to enjoy.
