As one of the press releases for the album states, the most recent UJD album is titled after those two underutilized things on either side of our head! Ears is the first studio release from the band since 1995’s Fairytales from Needland. Though the band hasn’t released any new albums for the past four years, they have been touring extensively and it shows. The new songs are tight, crisp, and (needless to say with these guys) full of energy. More than any previous record, Ears really captures the band’s immense energy and power that is evident at any of their live concerts. Part of the credit for this should surely go to former Idiot Flesh member Dan Rathbun who engineered and mixed the album. From the folky opener “Barefeet” to the crazy “Cowboy Song” to the album’s march-like closer “Silence,” the music has happiness, sadness, drama, lots of fun, and did I already mention tons of energy? The musicians are in top form here, especially saxophonist Jindra Dolansky. That guy is a monster! The sax solo in “Sweat” is excellent and a typical example of Dolansky’s fast staccato playing style. The compositions are great, the playing is excellent, and it’s a fun listen. What more do you want? Ears is definitely one of the best new releases of 1999.
