A Couple of Times Cover art

[This was written for the 2004 reissue on Garden of Delights]

Out of the depths of extreme obscurity comes another Garden of Delights reissue. This short-lived band consisted of drummer Reinhard Fischer and keyboard player Klaus Bangert, and perhaps due to the commercial nonviability of such a duo, managed only one recording session (thirteen tracks spread through October and November 1973) and a handful of live performances. Only 500 copies each of the eleven-track album and a single were pressed. The master tapes have been lost, so this CD has as its source a mint copy of the vinyl release, resulting in surprisingly good quality, though a little anemic in the low end (a factor perhaps as much due to the use of keyboard bass as the source). Stylistically, Twogether is a little reminiscent of ELP when Bangert plays organ, though more blues-based and less complex. When the keys switch to piano and synthesizer, the Emerson comparison fades, with a slight lounge jazz vibe at times; classical influences also crop up in a somewhat Wakeman-like manner. Fischer’s drumming is imaginative and colorful, if not strictly precise. With only keyboards to fill up the sound, the drums seem quite exposed. Typically for a German band of the era, the vocals are forgettable and only sparsely present, and when they are, the piano-organ arrangements bring to mind early Procol Harum with Trower AWOL. For the bonus tracks (both sides of the single), uncredited bass and guitar are added.
