When it comes to dreamy shoegaze pop, Oakland’s Torrey has you covered. After some EPs with a more stripped-down jangly sound, they’ve gone full-on Lush for their debut full-length. And by Lush, I mean Spooky (1992), one of the defining documents of the style that is called either dream pop or shoegaze (or some combination of those terms). We’re talking a big wall of guitar sound drenched in reverb, an energetic rhythm section, and ethereal female vocals relatively low in the mix. Given that this is a well-worn path in popular music (without generally being popular in the sense of massive sales), the question becomes, “What does Torrey have to offer that hasn’t already been done?” I suppose hard-core fans of the genre won’t care about that, and just be thrilled that another band is producing the music they love. For others, I can say that the melodies here are good, and the production isn’t so muddy that it gets annoying. There is some variation from song to song, with some featuring acoustic guitar and others leaning towards a punkish edge, but the album is quite coherent as a whole. The mood is trippy, so lovers of psychedelic rock can also find things to like as well. I think the songs are good enough that they would work even without the production, which bodes well for the future of the band.
