Tony Hazzard may not be a familiar name, but he wrote a ton of hits in the 60s for The Hollies, Manfred Mann, Herman’s Hermits, Cliff Richard, Gene Pitney, Lulu, and Andy Wiilliams. Recorded between 1966 and 1969 at Regent Sound in London, Demonstration is a collection of demo tracks of the songs that appeared on his 1969 solo debut Tony Hazzard Sings Tony Hazzard. This new reissue was remixed and remastered from the original 4-track tapes that Hazzard was fortunate to buy before they were destroyed. These thirteen songs are more than mere demos, they feature orchestrated arrangements in the style of the 60s, plus Tony Hicks of The Hollies recorded his lead guitar for “Listen to Me” and Hazzard edited it into the demo track. Tony has a great voice and his versatility as a songwriter is quite evident. He knew how to craft songs for different artists and bands. There is the Beatle-esque ballad that opens the album “The Matter with You,” the Britpop ballad  “You Won’t Be Leaving” for Hermin’s Hermits, “Brown Eyed Girl,” not the Van Morrison tune but the song recorded by Manfred Mann, “Fox on the Run” and “Ha! Ha! Said the Clown” also for Manfred Mann, “Hello World” for the Tremelos, “Listen to Me” for The Hollies, “Goodnight Sweet Josephine” for The Yardbirds, “Me, the Peaceful Heart” for Lulu, etc. Tony was excellent at crafting catchy and whimsical songs, and Demonstration is a nice acoustical treat for your ears.
