The Gray Field Recordings — She Sleeps to the Sound of Knives
(Bandcamp no#, 2023, DL)

She Sleeps to the Sound of Knives Cover art

Here is some music that you do not encounter every day. And you can tell from the title She Sleeps to the Sound of Knives, that this album is going to be unusual at best. Given the fragility of many people, there probably should be some kind of disclaimer, such as “Abandon all hope ye who listen to this album.” Greek avantgarde musician and composer Rebecca Loftiss has been recording and producing music as The Gray Field Recordings since 2004. She Sleeps to the Sound of Knives is her first studio recording in ten years. The music is bizarre and surreal, with heavily processed sound sources, electronics, and vocals that can be very unsettling at times. “Sex Flowers” and the title track sound like different and much darker takes on Pink Floyd’s “Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict.” The mechanical scraping and banging peppered throughout the album is quite Faust-ian — it is difficult to imagine what was running though Loftiss’ mind as she composed and constructed these sonic tone poems. Given the dark and bizarre nature of her work, she is a sonic equivalent of a succubus. Released this past June, She Sleeps to the Sound of Knives is more appropriate for October 31. Approach with caution, and beware of the call of the siren!
