The Verge Cover art

The Verge, a new Norwegian jazz-rock quartet, met at school and performed their first concerts in 2019. The band consists of Emil Storløkken Åse on guitar, Aksel Rønning from Cosmic Swing Orchestra on saxophone and flute, Alf Høines from Caramel 11 on electric bass, and Ingvald André Vassbø from Kanaan, Full Earth, and Motorpsycho on drums. They recorded their self-titled album in 2021, which Is It Jazz? Records just released on October 4, 2024. The album consists of seven original tracks that range from fiery melodic jazz to energetic prog rock to atmospheric free-improvisation to heavy riffs. Some of the album high points include the funky and sleazy “Snake,” the clashing “Gratitude,” the slow and raucous “Postludium,” and the excellent album closer “Patterns for Meditation.” This entertaining album integrates a number of different styles, with the four musicians interweaving it all together in a seamless manner resulting in a coherent form. The Verge’s improvisation, spontaneous interplay, and joyful attitude make their self-titled debut album worth a listen.
