The Owl Service is an English alternative folk music collective formed in 2006 by multi-instrumentalist Steve Paul Collins. Back in 1990 Collins was a teen, and unsurprisingly a metalhead. One day, while working in his local record shop he discovered Fotheringay’s 1970 debut album, and a new world opened up. His love of Sandy Denny’s music led to the formation of The Owl Service sixteen years later. With Fruits de Mer’s shared love of Sandy Denny, it is no surprise that these two paths crossed, resulting in this new 7-inch, A Tribute to Sandy Denny. Along with Alison O’Donnell of Mellow Candle, who also recorded the second Fruits de Mer single in 2008, providing backup vocals is Owl Service’s Dorothy Chappell on lead vocals. It is as if Sandy Denny re-recorded these two songs 50 years after her untimely death. The A side of the single is a cover of Fotheringay’s “The Sea” from their 1970 self-titled album, and the B Side is a cover of Fairport Convention’s “Genesis Hall” from their 1969 album Unhalfbricking. The combination of Collins’ instrumentation and the exquisite vocals is definitely a loving tribute to Sandy Denny, the icon of British folk-rock.
