A few months ago I reviewed the Groovy Things collection by Norwegian garage-rock revivalists The Cosmic Dropouts. After that band’s 1989 debut album, guitarist Arne Thelin left to form his own band, which he called The Lust-O-Rama. The style is very much the same: adrenaline-drenched mid-60s garage rock with raunchy pre-metal guitars and groovy organ sounds. Twenty-Six Screams presents 19 tracks brimming with the sound of that era. So if you can’t get enough of The Sonics, The Seeds, and the early (pre-psychedelic) Yardbirds, Thelin and company have got you covered. This is straight-up rock and roll without any frills, and it’s done so well that it’s bound to put a smile on your face. It’s the kind of music that is deceptively simple, so although it’s built up from bluesy riffs and I-IV-V progressions, they vary all the stock parts enough to keep things interesting. This 1990 album fills in another piece of Norway’s musical history, one that many listeners might be unaware of among the scores of progressive rock and death metal bands from that part of the world. No Mellotrons, growls, chugging guitars, or odd time signatures to be found anywhere, just loads of fun.
