The Lonesome Organist — Them / Apples
(Bandcamp No Sides NS 67, 2024, MC / DL)

Jeremy Jacobsen started his one-man-band project called The Lonesome Organist back in the 90s, singing and playing a variety of instruments (not just organ). He limited himself to recording no more than eight tracks on each song with the aim of making sure that the music could be performed live without additional musicians, a feat he accomplished primarily by playing two instruments, such as accordion and drums, at the same time as singing. After releasing several albums, the project went dormant, only to be revived with Them / Apples. Jacobsen’s instruments include organ, accordion, drums, violin, mandolin, and more, and he’s quite competent on all of them — not that virtuosity is the point in his music (the brief violin cadenza at the beginning of “Swimming with Gratitude” is great, however). He has a strong voice that often reminds me of U2’s Bono, and his songs range from punkish blasts to ragged waltzes and folky mandolin-fests. There’s a very DIY homegrown vibe about the project which fits his music perfectly, not distracting from the quality of his songwriting. Them / Apples is an intriguing glimpse into the world of a singularly distinctive musician which fascinates on numerous levels.
