The Insektlife Cycle — Superstrung
(Fruits de Mer Friends of the Fish 48, 2021, 8" lathe-cut)

Phillipine instrumental band The Insektlife Cycle have several releases on Fruits de Mer Records and an album on Sugarbush Records. Their new four-track EP is an extremely limited 8” lathe cut titled Superstrung! The band describes their EP as “a sonic work of insrumental heavy psych and modern blues in sunshine acid.” In my opinion, what I hear is jazz prog fusion on “Old Year’s Eve,” harsh prog rock similar to Jack Dupon on the title track, calm melodic psych on “Sol Velvet,” and cool and laid back urban prog on “Recline.” Quite a gamut of excellent music, engineered by guitarist Ronnel Vivo and produced by the band. The trio of Ronnel Vivo (guitars, samples, and synths), Nal Vivo (drums and synths), and Jay Jumawan (guitars) have produced some inventive and noteworthy music, though quite limited availability. The lathe cuts are long gone, as well as the 50 cassette tapes (25 blue and 25 yellow), but you can still access the music on Bandcamp.
