Isn’t it great when your hopes are realized, even in small ways? When I reviewed the self-titled debut of The Forever Moment, I remarked that I hoped it wouldn’t be the last we’d hear from the collaboration of Mark Cook and Steven Leak, and here we have Splay. OK, it’s not world peace or even fortune, but I’m happy they’ve given us another set of wonderful music. Cook contributes Warr guitar (with and without frets), fretless bass, classical guitar, samplers, drums, and various keyboards; Leak is on board with synthesizers, samplers, electronics, and field recordings; and guest Ottmar Soulier plays keyboards, trumpet, and percussion on one track. The music is very much in line with the previous album, full of rich atmospheres, catchy grooves, and all sorts of varying textures. As you listen to different tracks, many different comparisons may come to mind, from Djam Karet to Ozric Tentacles to Markus Reuter’s Truce albums. Each track is a little different, with distinctive details to set it apart from the others while maintaining the group’s identity. You’ll hear sequences as the base of “This Now,” and percussion for “Java Current,” while “The Moon’s Concern” features sampled flutes and a prominent fretless bass melody. We’re into a realm where sounds produced acoustically in the air are melded seamlessly with those created via software and other electronic means. And the result is eight tracks of sheer goodness — don’t miss out on what The Forever Moment is doing!
