The Chemistry Set — The Tragic Fridge Magnet / STP
(Fruits de Mer winkle 61, 2025, 7")

The Chemistry Set (Paul Lake and Dave McLean) has unleashed another Fruits de Mer 7-inch of their signature trippy British psych pop concocted in their musical lab. The A Side is a bizarre song about a strange refrigerator magnet. The back story is that whenever Paul and his wife go on holiday they buy one or more refrigerator magnets, which now cover the appliance and bring back good and sometimes not-so-good memories. He was fantasizing about the possibility of visiting Egypt and buying a magnet with the inscription “Hello from Cairo.” Now what if this magnet contained a cursed amulet from the time of the Pharaohs? This speculation was the inspiration for this trippy excursion. The B Side is another what-if story. What if a man in the 60s took a tab of LSD, a special tab called STP after the motor oil, and he starts tripping? Stars falling from the heavens, gigantic celestial beings with glowing eyes, and a warped time-space continuum tempt him to ask for the impossible, with the beings saying, “We cannot give you what you deny.” Along with the surreal lyrics, there is a ton of psych phasing and swirling in the music. The Chemistry Set has released another stellar recording on Fruits de Mer!
