The 23rd Turnoff — Michael Angelo: The Complete 1967 Recordings
(Think Like a Key TLAK1132, 1967/2022, CD / LP / DL)

Originating from the ashes of the Liverpool Merseybeat band The Kirkbys and inspired by fellow Liverpudlians The Beatles, The 23rd Turnoff featured the cult singer-songwriter Jimmy Campbell. The band’s name paid homage to the M6 highway exit onto East Lancashire Road in Liverpool. Their only single, “Michael Angelo,” was commercially unsuccessful, and they were relegated to obscurity, only to be discovered years later due to rescued acetate recordings. Lovingly restored by Prof. Stoned, the original thirteen tracks along with two previously unreleased songs are now available on Michael Angelo: The Complete 1967 Recordings. Included on this album are their “Michael Angelo” Deram single (both sides) plus two different demo versions. “Michael Angelo” is a true treasure of the 60s — it’s a quite trippy psych song augmented by trumpets. And the demos are stripped down versions, but just as trippy. In their less psychy mode, they resemble fellow Brits Herman’s Hermits and “(Not) A Penny in My Pocket” has a music hall vibe, much like Jimmy Buffet’s “Pencil Thin Mustache.” There is even a bit of obvious flower power on “Flowers Are Flowering.” Overall the sound quality is excellent given the source material, and experiencing the 38 minutes across fifteen songs is a refreshing glimpse of 1967. The CD comes with a twelve-page booklet detailing The 23rd Turnoff’s brief history, as well as a number of rare photos.
