Sterbus — Solar Barbecue

Solar Barbecue may be only 25 minutes long, but it’s packed with enough ideas for an album twice that length. Sterbus is clearly inspired in large part by Cardiacs, and the nine tracks are packed with the same kind of manic energy that the late Tim Smith and company were known for. Sterbus deviates from that sound by being a bit more proggy and throwing in some Mr Bungle type intrusions. While previous Sterbus albums did feature vocals, this collection is all instrumental, and in fact contains some instrumental tracks that were previously released on other albums, along with tracks recorded during album sessions but not used at the time. To these are added tracks that are completely rearranged versions of old tunes as well as some new material. It’s a blast to listen to from start to finish, and should serve as a great teaser for the band in general. Any group that can put out 25 minutes this good is worth investigating.
