Sounds of New Soma — Fluxus 2071
(Tonzonen TON157, 2023, CD / LP / DL)

Fluxus 2071 Cover art

On previous releases, Sounds of New Soma has given us long-form electronic music (Trip) with only the core duo of Alex Djelassi and Dirk Raupach, and shorter pieces with guest musicians (Musique Bizarre), so I suppose it makes sense that Fluxus 2071 splits the difference, with ten relatively short tracks featuring Djelassi and Raupach. Some of the tracks, like “Bunte Motten” and “Lord Helmchens Keksmaschine,” are upbeat, with pulsing synthesizers and percussion, while others, such as “Schimmer” and “VuhVuh,” pursue a less energetic path, with long droning chords wafting in and out of field. Still other tracks pursue a middle path, combining elements from both sides. The sounds are created using a variety of synthesizers augmented by guitar, programmed percussion, and occasional saxophone; spoken vocals show up on one track. It’s an interesting bridge between Berlin School electronic music and space-oriented Krautrock, and should appeal to listeners across a wide spectrum of taste.
